In 1992, the Nu Sigma Chapter of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. a professional male service organization established a youth development and cultural enrichment program for African American youth in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Nu Sigma Youth Services has developed a wide range of program activities and services for African American youth ages 8-17 years old. Several of the program components that were conducted by the organization as independent projects, now operate under this one program initiative. The program is operated by African American males and females, both members of the fraternity as well as community volunteers, who provide positive role models unlike the usual negative images, which many of the youth are confronted with on a daily basis. It is envisioned that through this interaction, more positive self-images among the participants will be developed, which in turn will lead to more goal oriented and responsible individuals. Several of the activities specifically target youth in the North, South and West Philadelphia areas. These areas of the city have been specifically identified by Nu Sigma Youth Services for services for children and adolescents. The services and activities to be provided by the program include leadership development, cultural enrichment, recreational programs, career and employment, prevention/educational activities that address the issues of substance abuse, violence and high-risk sexual activity. Nu Sigma Youth Services is composed of eight program areas: 1) Community - Based Projects; 2) Adolescent Health Initiative; 3) Summer Enrichment & Employment Project; 4) Camp Sigma; 5) Sigma Athletic Association; 6) Sigma Beta Clubs of Philadelphia; 7) Ladies First and Ladies First, Jr. and 8) School - Based initiatives. In 2002, Nu Sigma Youth Services launched the BluePrint for Peace and Safety. In conjunction with this program, Nu Sigma Youth Services began implementing its aggressive agenda with its already established programs including but not limited to the Sigma Beta Clubs, the Summer Enrichment and Employment Project and the Sigma Athletic Association. The organization added the following programs to address the needs of inner city youth: The Leadership Academies, Ladies First and Ladies First, Jr., School-Based mentoring programs, an Adolescent Health Initiative and the Nu Sigma Beacons at Jay Cooke Middle School and Benjamin Franklin High School.
